MAY & JUNE 2024 WINNERS

Julian, 17

Mind Craft
Yearlong SketchBox Subscription Valued at $240

“The Mind Craft campaign is significant by encouraging self growth and self expression though exercising creativity. In this social media dominated era, expectations are forever influencing our actions, personality, and fostering anxieties to be perfect and accepted. But Mind Craft allows you to craft your mind into a tranquil inner world through crafting with creativity!”

Juan, 21

Science Go Seek
$2,500

“DoSomething's Science Go Seek Challenge is a campaign that seeks to illustrate how STEM principles are related to the development of our daily life environment. This campaign is important to me because it opens the mind and, in turn, opens the doors to realizing that fields such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics don't have to be boring if approached and studied based on our interests. Who would have thought that snakes could have any relation to oceanic and mechanical engineering? Just like this example, I can make countless other contributions to the community if I look for direct connections between things. I am young and have the mental capabilities, tools, and energy to work for and with society if I believe in and follow my STEM interests.”

Keyera, 18

Uncensored: Women's History Month
$500

“This campaign is so important to me because as a young person in America, it is so often that I can be made to feel as if my voice does not matter. However, when given opportunities like this one, it is made incredibly evident that my voice is relevant and can make significant changes in society. Literature is such an important thing to me and it is heartbreaking that there are books in the world that may be incredibly important to an individual but are being taken off shelves due to the opinions of higher powers. Everyone deserves to have access to literature of all kinds, opinions, and stances. I hope that this is only the beginning of me being given opportunities to take stances for what I believe is right because it is so important that I, like all other people my age, grow confident and comfortable in our opinions and voices.”

Charlotte, 18

Certified Bestie
$2,500

“The campaign that I have participated in is deeply important to me for a number of reasons. An adequate understanding of mental health, especially that of people my own age, is crucial for so many reasons. It can help other adolescents know that they are not alone in their personal struggles and that there are a plethora of resources available to help them succeed. Without the tools that the DoSomething organization has implemented through their Certified Bestie program and course, I would not be able to help myself, my peers, and my community grow and persevere in the way that it has with this educational resource. So many facets of society exploit the lack of resources that teenagers deserve in order to better their mental health and wellness. By taking this opportunity to learn more about how to make a change to this, I can continue to be a part of the change that the world and my peers deserve to have.”

MARCH & APRIL 2024 WINNERS

Ayana, 18

Mind Craft
Yearlong SketchBox Subscription Valued at $240

“This campaign was important to me because I think advocating for mental health is extremely important. A lot of people don’t know how much art can help with your mental wellbeing, and I believe spreading that information is the best way to raise awareness.”

Daniella, 19

Certified Bestie
$2,500

“The Certified Bestie campaign discusses what is perhaps one of the biggest and most important conversations in the world. Mental health issues that affect people of all ages, genders, ethnicities, cultures, economic standings, religions, etc., making it a universal concern. You never know what’s going on under someone else’s mask, just as they can’t see under yours, but understanding how to help yourself and others is the next step at making the world a healthier, happier, and more understanding place for everyone. One of my strongest values in life is empathy. I take pride in my ability to be a good listener and give advice when appropriate, so much so that I’ve always become the 'therapist friend' of all of my friend groups throughout my life.”

Kroslyn, 18

Science Go Seek
$2,500

“This campaign is important to me because I want young people to know that STEM is 100% doable. My whole academic life, I believed I was dumb. Especially when it came to STEM courses. When I got to high school, I went to a STEM based program and struggled my entire 10th grade year , due to my schedule consisting of STEM courses. Since I attended an early college, I started taking college classes my junior year, and I wanted to pursue nursing. I knew pre-nursing courses consisted primarily of STEM, and I let my 10th grade year be a lesson learned. I started taking my STEM classes with a changed mindset of 'I can and I will understand this information.' This resulted in me making all A’s in the science pre-nursing courses. I want my story to inspire young people to believe in the fact that they can understand hard topics and excel in school.”

Raquel

Mind Craft
Yearlong SketchBox Subscription Valued at $240

“This campaign was important to me because art is a creative outlet I use to express myself, and it has helped me tremendously with my mental health.”

Ryan, 18

Certified Bestie
$2,500

“This campaign is important to me because of how necessary it is to know about mental health, and what to do when someone or yourself is struggling mentally. I can relate this to my own life in situations regarding my best friend. My best friend has struggled with mental health since we were kids, and she didn’t open up to me about it for many years. I always felt bad that I didn’t know what to say or do to help her, but after going through the DoSomething courses I got a better understanding of how she felt, and the steps she could take to get help. This campaign helped me be more mindful of others feelings and emotions, and I have shared and will continue to share the exercises and practices that I learned in the Wellness Education Lab courses.”

JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2024 WINNERS

Aidan Cook, 18

Certified Bestie
$2,500

"What college should I attend? Is Athletic Training the career I want to pursue? Am I good enough to make the volleyball team? What if I don’t do well on my next test? Did I just hurt my friend’s feelings by what I said?' These are just some of the thoughts rambling around in my mind that cause me to feel anxious and stressed about the future. The Certified Bestie program offered by DoSomething.org couldn’t have come at a better time. Watching the videos taught me how to better handle anxiety, depression, and other stressful emotions. The breathing technique, asking for help, and being an open listener to others are just a couple of the helpful strategies I took away from the classes.”

Kalayah Melbourne, 16

Brake It Down
$2,000

“This campaign is very important to me, because we frequently forget how dangerous and challenging driving can be. So it is important to remind and caution others to be aware of the consequences of reckless driving, to remind them that health and safety is more important than getting to destinations quickly. If these pointers are shared more frequently among ourselves or taught more in schools, it has the ability to benefit an entire community and encourage safe driving behaviors in teens. Above all, it can keep many people safe while driving.”

Sophia Jacobs, 23

Mind Craft
Yearlong SketchBox Subscription Valued at $240

"This campaign is important to me because art is such a great way to express yourself but I think that there is too much fear around not creating the "perfect" piece which prevents a lot of people from enjoying the process. Campaigns such as this one which encourage people to give art a try as a way to protect their mental wellbeing are a great way to eliminate some of this fear. In a time where so many people are struggling with their mental health, small actions, such as expressing yourself through art, can add up and help you improve your mental health."

Natalie Mendoza, 18

Mind Craft
Yearlong SketchBox Subscription Valued at $240

"I find art and self-expression to be incredibly valuable. Art requires me to use my mind to create a meaningful composition, while also providing a relaxing break from my other responsibilities. This campaign encouraged me to continue pursuing art as a hobby and to continue expressing myself and my ideas."
